Our kickboxing training style combines the techniques and skills of boxing with explosive martial arts kicks delivered above the waist (kicks below the waist are taught at Intermediate stage).
Our training strengthens and tones the whole body whilst increasing aerobic fitness, anaerobic fitness, muscular endurance, flexibility, agility and balance together with LinkArts kickboxing motor skills.
We teach techniques to give students good balance and agility in order to equip students with the ability to perform multiple kicks. In the first grade students are taught the basic front and reverse punches, front and roundhouse kicks and then these are later put together in very simple combinations. Later in the curriculum hook and uppercut punches are taught together with hook kicks, back kicks and spinning kicks etc. The following are also taught where required:
We focus on students grasping the foundations of LinkArts; this means focusing on the basic punches and kicks as set out in the 1st grade of the curriculum. This is a very important facet of the curriculum so a lot of time and effort is dedicated to this area; students are able to build upon this stage once they understand the principles.
The curriculum and the exercises are design to provide students with a multiple of benefits. If exercises and techniques are performed as instructed the maximum fitness and health benefit can be achieved. The format of each class is divided into six sections:
We start with gentle movements in order to allow synovial fluids to lubricate the relevant joints.
We replicate the movements that will be performed in the main class with aerobic exercises at a rate of about 50% of the maximum heart rate.
We perform a gentle stretch of all the main muscle groups to be used in the main session. We are careful not to go into the development stretch mode as this could over stretch the muscle which could lead to injury when performing explosive kicking techniques in the main section etc.
In this section we split the class in sections depending on the area that students need to practice; we concentrate on form and techniques etc. Some students are also taken through safe and correct way to use punch bags delivering punches and kicks etc. Other students who are preparing for their grading are able to repetitiously practice their part of the curriculum.
15 minutes of each lesson is dedicated to high intensity interval fitness. We have designed exercises to develop and strengthen the relevant muscles and tendons for kickboxing. Students are taken through a rigorous series of aerobic and anaerobic exercises where all the fitness components are utilised (aerobic, muscular endurance, agility, balance, core stability etc). We have various formats that we use in this section for example sometimes we use the Tabata protocol to really test students fitness ability where they work at 70%-80% of their maximum heart rate. We use plyometric exercises to get the muscles, joints and tendons etc get used to explosives actions when kicking and punching. We target the chest, deltoids, the core area, quadriceps & hamstrings to make sure these areas are ready for stringent and robust training. This area of the training is functional; the exercises are designed so that members who are only interested in fitness can also benefit from the exercises. .
This section is where students improve their flexibility, particular those that are used in kickboxing. Each stretch is held for 10-15 seconds before moving to the next muscle group.
CRB: All instructors have been checked and cleared to teach children and provide fitness services to the public.
Insurance: All instructors are insured under WAKO GB.
Equipments: We ensure that all participants in free sparring and pre-arranged sparring sessions wear the appropriate equipments. All sparring sessions are supervised by instructors and students are reminded to use light contact.
First Aid: There is always at least one qualified first aider available at all times.
